During our panel, Helen Liu, COO of Bybit, stood out with her vision for how blockchain can drive positive change. Her dedication to using blockchain for social impact, especially through the Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA), was a refreshing contrast to the usual profit-driven narratives we often see in the crypto space.
The Blockchain for Good Alliance
"Bybit committed five million every year to this organization (referring to BGA)”
— Helen Liu, COO, Bybit
The above demonstrates their willingness to invest in projects that prioritize societal benefits over quick gains. One striking example from BGA is their initiative to support coffee farmers in Mexico through blockchain technology. This transparency ensured that the farmers' yield would be tracked accurately, allowing them to access much-needed capital and better their livelihoods.
Breaking the Stigma for Long-Term Impact
What I appreciate most about Helen's approach is her determination to shift the perception of crypto from speculation to meaningful impact. "We try to break this curse. Crypto is not a scam" she said, and that statement resonated deeply with me. Her work with BGA exemplifies how blockchain can be a powerful force for good when guided by purpose and empathy.
Inspiring a Better Blockchain Future
Helen's vision for the future of blockchain is more than just a shift in technology; it’s a call to action for the entire crypto community to think beyond profit margins. Her work with BGA is proof that blockchain can be used as a catalyst for addressing real-world problems and creating sustainable solutions that benefit communities in need. By focusing on projects that prioritize transparency, fairness, and empowerment, Helen is demonstrating that blockchain has the potential to go beyond financial speculation and become a tool for social good.
However, BGA isn’t the only organization working towards this goal. There are other remarkable initiatives worldwide that share this vision of harnessing blockchain for social good, each contributing to a more inclusive and equitable future.
Global Initiatives Leading the Way
This commitment to long-term impact reminds me of other global initiatives that are driving similar change. For instance, ConsenSys’s Blockchain for Social Impact Coalition (BSIC) supports startups that leverage blockchain to tackle social and environmental challenges. Like BGA, BSIC connects projects that address issues such as financial inclusion, supply chain transparency, and renewable energy.
Another notable example is Binance Charity, which has committed millions in crypto donations to initiatives like providing food for schoolchildren in Africa, building solar-powered schools, and supporting COVID-19 relief efforts worldwide. They utilize blockchain’s transparency to ensure every donation reaches those in need, aligning closely with Helen's vision for how blockchain can create tangible social impact.
